      Is it a laptop that came with Windows 10 or 11? If so you need to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS and also make sure that Legacy Boot is enabled. After you disable Secure Boot that is. Then you can test out Linux on a live CD or live USB by booting into live mode. Linux Mint and Ubuntu both have options to try out Live mode first. I also found this on the Mint forums about Lenovo PC's which may help you as well. Here: forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=361974

    Hi, @AndreaBorman. Great channel you have. I started using Gnome Flashback, but Metacity wm has no pseudo tiling (snapping) features. Which other wm would you suggest, if any?

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman 2 дня назад

      There isn't another Window Manager you can use. Like most desktops it only works with the default one which is Metacity. Some people use Compiz which still works on Gnome Flashback and Mate but not on Main Gnome. If you try to run Compiz on Gnome 43 or 46 it crashes the whole desktop but it does work in Gnome Flashback. Because like Mate it is based on Gnome 2. Ubuntu used to come with Gnome 2 and Compiz for extra settings. Then they switched to Unity then Gnome 3.

      @@AndreaBorman I like Flashback most, so changing to Mate is not an option to me. However, there are other options, like Cortile. I just looking for a native solution. I guess that switching Metacity with Compiz is somewhat burdensome. Thank for your input!💖

      @@Lobaluna9333 Well I know that older versions of Ubuntu came with Gnome 2 and Compiz which is also a Window Manager. Linux Mint also had it in their version of Gnome 2 but now they have it in their Mate Edition. On Mate there is the option to switch from Marco to Compiz if you have Compiz installed. You can also do this on Gnome Flashback. I have never heard of Cortile. It must be new.

      @AndreaBorman 4 дня назад

      I did try it on Debian Bookworm but it did not run very well and there were also problems with it on Linux Mint. So I have stopped using it now because of this. I think the problem is that TDE is based on a very old version of the KDE desktop and the apps have not been updated enough to run on a modern Linux environment. If you want KDE you are better of using the KDE Plasma desktop. That's what I use now.

      The terminal I have installed is QTerminal and the theme is called Random. Which changes the background color every time you open the terminal. The KDE terminal also has this theme. The Debian wallpapers are quite ugly. The default green one in Bookworm is a bit better but it's still not one I would choose. Most people do change the default wallpaper that a Linux distro comes with when you first install. Linux Mint and Ubuntu have their default themes but they still look nice. So there is no reason why Debian cannot provide nice wallpapers but maybe they just don't like to put in anything that is too fancy. Or maybe that's their trademark. It's no big deal because you can always change the wallpapers and theme. Most people do.

      I did test out the Cosmic Desktop from POP Os in live CD and it was not working well at all. Everything was very slow to load and they have a different file manager. The file manager is not Nautils it was one that I think is for the Comic desktop. I don't know the name of the file manager but it was very slow as well and it did not show all of the files. A lot of things didn't work or were too slow to lead. So I gave up on it. I would not use it on my desktop. POP OS with the Gnome versions is fine but the Cosmic Desktop did not work at all for me. I see no need for it anyway as we have so many other desktops that I think are better. So no I didn't like it.

    Ciao Andrea. I've watched your last videos, always find them of great interest. I write here all the comments I've had about their topics. I've reinstated "Startup applications" and everything went fine. If there's a way to download the package in other languages, i.e. in italian, let me now. Presently I'm using debian bookworm 12 with the gnome DE and I can say that it's perfect to me in every aspects. I prefer to use X11 because when I use wayland I've had a problem with the sound theme: it doesn't start on the system startup. Moreover the scaling of some application isn't very good i.e. the texts are very small. As the default file manager I'm using Thunar from KDE and I'm doing very well with it, have you ever tried it? Last thing: I've tried trixie on another computer, I'm having some issue with the GTK/Libadwaita themes and some extensions don't work as well and some others don't work at all.

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman 8 дней назад

      Thanks. I am glad you find my videos helpful. A lot of people have problems with Wayland in that the screen recording and some other webcam software does not work well. I have also found this which is why I use X11. I think Wayland still has a long way to go before it can replace X11. Thunar File Manager is from Xfce not KDE. KDE uses Dolphin as it's default file manager. I do know Thunar since I did use Linux Mint Xfce for a time which had it. I prefer to use either Nemo or Caja on Gnome as both are falks of Nautilus and so Gnome compatible. I think Gnome 46 has now switched to GTK4 but I am not sure about this. The other GTK3 themes should still work. Because some of mine are GTK3 and GTK2 so it could be something else that is the reason. You can make the text larger in Gnome Tweaks and in the system settings on Gnome. The default Adwaita theme for Gnome is not very good so I don't use it. I always use the themes from Linux Mint and Ubuntu which work on all desktops. The Ubuntu Yaru theme is in Synaptic Package Manager. The Mint themes can be downloaded from the Linux Mint Packages website under Linux Mint Faye. Although any of the Mint themes from other versions will work on Debian.

    • @Astronaut79
      @Astronaut79 8 дней назад

      @@AndreaBorman yes it's Xfce, I got confused with the acronyms. You're right about the compatibility since I had to install the Xfce terminal to open a terminal with the right button inside the folders. I don't like the adwaita theme either. As for Trixie I think we should wait a while until the developers upgrade the extensions in order to be totally compatible and working in gnome 46. For the time being I will keep on staying with gnome 43 and Debian 12. Thanks for the answer.

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman 7 дней назад

      @@Astronaut79 We have to remember that Debian Trixie is still in testing so there may be bugs. Also because it is still in testing it does not mean that the problems that we find in there now will be in the final release. So we just have to wait until Debian do release Trixie as stable to see how it will be. However I have not had any problems with the testing build so I will stay on trixie for now. I think you can upgrade it to stable when Debian do release it. Or the repositories change to stable automatically so you don't have to do a reinstall. Though I am not sure about this and I might want to start with a clean install anyway. So I may install Debian Trixie again from the Stable ISO when it comes out. Yes the Adwaita theme is very ugly and outdated. I read that Linux Mint have dropped it from their Cinnamon version and are still using GTK3 because of this. But I think a better option would be for them to use one of their own themes rather than downgrade their apps to GTK3. Ubuntu is now using GTK4 like Gnome 46 but GTK2 and 3 themes still work. Because I still have them on Gnome 46.

    Hi Andrea , it would be a great help if you can make a video how we can remove the root access to user and whenever we boot start we open a dedicated application.

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman 9 дней назад

      When you install Debian where is asks you to create a root account you ignore that and don't put anything in. It will then ask you to create a user account which is the sudo user. Then when the install is finished and you log into your account if you want to enable the root account. you just type " sudo passwd root" in the terminal. It will then ask you for the new password for root, which is whatever password you want to create and that's it. That is what I do. Then when you need to open any file or run anything as root you will be able to do so. You can also create another user account where the user is a standard user. That is they are not the administer. So they cannot install software or make changes to the system. So they won't have access to the root account unless you change the account to administer. Which is the same as how it works on Windows.
